Sol Bermann

University Privacy Officer; Interim Chief Information Security Officer

Bio

Sol Bermann is the University Privacy Officer, and Interim Chief Information Security Officer for the University of Michigan. He partners across the university working on strategic and operational IT security and privacy matters that have a broad impact on the university community and U-M’s mission. Prior to joining U-M, Sol was the Director of International Privacy at Walmart, and previous to that was Chief Privacy Officer for the State of Ohio (the first ever specifically appointed state CPO). He is former Associate Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Law and Policy Studies at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, and was an adjunct faculty member in OSU's International Studies Program, with a teaching focus on privacy, law, policy and civil liberties. Sol is a frequent writer and presenter on issues related to privacy and information security, including co-authoring “Information Privacy: Official Reference for the Certified Information Privacy Professional.” He also actively participates in a number of industry work groups. Sol holds a B.A from Beloit College, a M.A. from the University of Virginia, and a J.D. from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.
